Each year players of the McHenry County Hurricanes Travel Baseball Association donate their time to help the community through volunteerism. This is the PITCH (Players Investing Towards Community Help) program you have heard about. This year, our 11U team has once again decided to join FFFF (Food For Famished Families) and help collect various food items to help the Crystal Lake Food Pantry. We felt this project would have a meaningful impact not only on our players, but on the community as well.
In early March, the 11U team solicited help from their families and friends in the form of food and household item donations. Each team member had collected various donations and delivered them to the Crystal Lake Food bank. At that time, all the donations were weighed...for a total of just under a TON of goods. In the past three years, our team has proudly donated over 7000 pounds of food (7040 to be exact)!! The food bank then allowed the team to sort and stock the pantry shelves with their donations.
Some facts the team learned while visiting the pantry.
- No family/person in need will be denied help when requesting food.
- Food is available on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday mornings.
- Number of families served:
- In 1982, 15 families/month
- In 1991, 210 families/month
- In 2004, 350 families/month
- In 2009, 675 families/month
- In 2012, over 800 families/month will visit the Pantry.
- Pets within families of needs are also supplied with food.
- All the collected donations from our past teams were distributed to families in need by the end of the following
week.
- Time donations are also needed. The pantry is always looking for volunteers to help with daily
submissions, as well as food pick-up from various businesses willing to donate additional food.
